Periods of English Literature
Literary period can differ into several different categorized. Such as Old English, it also known as Anglo-Saxon literature, Middle English literature, Renaissance literature, Early Modern period which can divide into several part, The 18th century, Romanticism, Modernism, and Post modern literature.


Old English
Old English or Anglo Saxon period is very resembles by the dialect of Icelandic, Norwegian, North Frisian, Northumbrian, and Scots English, it happen because the Germanic tribes who over run from Europe to England in 5th century brought the old English. They also brought specific poetic tradition such as epic poem which become very popular including Beowulf . In the Old English progress, it dominantly represented by large number of religious works.
Middle English literature
This period categorize is a broad period from 500 to 1500 AD which includes Chaucer, romance, drama and verse.
Renaissance literature
This literary period really affected by the reformation of France. The poetry, drama, and prose in this period are produced under both Queen Elizabeth I and King James I constitute what is today labeled as early modern (or Renaissance).
Early modern period
Elizabeth era
This era get a powerful influence on the Renaissance time. Its plays really influence by Seneca plays (it is an Italian plays that draw the soldier in the renaissance time) because of that Elizabeth era also known as tragic era full of blood. In the development of this period the literary show up as popup story and show Edmund Spenser, Sir Philip Sidney, and William Shakespeare as the names of literary figure at that time.
· Jacobean literature
After Shakespeare’s death, the poet and dramatist Ben Jonson comes leading this literary figure by raise the theory of humorous. According to contemporary medical theory, behavioral differences result from a prevalence of one of the body's four "humours" (blood, phlegm, black bile, and yellow bile) over the other three; these humours correspond with the four elements of the universe: air, water, fire, and earth. This leads Jonson to exemplify such differences to the point of creating types, or clichés. Beaumont and Fletcher are names who follow Jonson styles and wrote a brilliant comedy The Knight of Burning Pestle. Another popular style of theatre during Jacobean times was the revenge play, popularized by John Webster and Thomas Kyd. George Chapman wrote a couple of subtle revenge tragedies.
· Caroline and Cromwellian literature
In this time period we could saw a flourishing of political literature in English. Hobbes's writings are some of the few political works from the era which are still regularly published. This period also saw a flourishing of news books, the precursors to the British newspaper.
· Restoration era
The largest and most important poetic form of the era was satire. In publication of satire was done anonymously. Prose in this period is dominated by Christian religious writing, but in the progress this era show the beginning of two genres they are fiction and journalism.
· Augustan literature
The most outstanding poet of the age is Alexander pope. In this period there is a competition over the proper model of the pastoral. Poet also used as criticism tools in critic on a doctrine of decorum. Drama this period featured the last plays of John Vanbrugh and William Congreve, both of them carried on the Restoration comedy with some alterations. However, the majority of staging were of lower farces and much more serious and domestic tragedies.
18th century
This period crosses from the late 18th Century to the early 19th mixed the Romantic Period with Gothic Romances. This time period is entering the age of sensibility. Literary product reflected by the rational and scientific approach to religious, social, political, and economic issues that promoted a secular view of the world. During the end of the 19th century Ann Radcliffe would be the pioneer of the Gothic Novel.
Romantic period
This period crosses from the late 18th Century to the late 19th, the Romantic period has some characteristic, it has a Value feeling and intuition over reasoning and Journey away from corruption of civilization and limits of rational thought toward the integrity of nature and freedom of the imagination, this period flourished with authors including Jane Austen, William Blake, Samuel Coleridge, and William Wordsworth.
Victorian literature
Novel has become the leading form of literature in this time period. During the reign of Queen Victoria (1837 - 1901) in England, literature reflected the impact of and struggles brought on by the Industrial Revolution. Charles Dickens appear and confirming the trend for serial publication.
Modernism
English literary modernism was cross between the First and Second World War. English literary movement was influenced by the ideas of Romanticism, Karl Marx’s political writings, and the psychoanalytic theories of subconscious –Sigmund Freud. The continental art movements of Impressionism, and Cubism, were also important inspirations for modernist writers.
Post-Modern Literature
Postmodern literature is used to describe certain tendencies in post-World War II literature. Ted Hughes, Doris Lessing, John Fowles, Don DeLillo, A.S. Byatt are some of figure in this period.
